Asthma - Peak Expiry Flow Rate Test

In Asthma the peak expiry flow rate test (PEFR) can be used to check the progression of the asthma in the home, but it also one of the main tests done to initially diagnose childhood asthma. The peak expiry flow rate test (PEFR) is used by the GP or the Asthma nurse each time you visit the doctors surgery to have an asthma check up.

The peak expiry flow rate test (PEFR) is a tubular device which you can hold in your hand and blow into. The amount of air that your child can breathe out from their lungs is measured using the peak expiry flow rate test (PEFR). The reading taken from the peak expiry flow rate test is then recorded and the correct type of medication can be prescribed using these results.

Your child will be given their own Peak Flow Test Kit and diary which will enable you to take their peak expiry flow rate at home and keep a record of the results. These should be used on a regular basis as a peak expiry flow rate test can indicate when asthma is stable, worsening or even if an attack is approaching.

Peak Expiry Flow Rate Test Kits are not suitable for children under the age of five years old unfortunately.
